Under-the-sink water filters are fast & easy to install (can be used in rental housing!)
• All “cold” water from the kitchen sink is filtered – good for drinking, cooking, washing produce, etc.
• All filters provide water quality as good – and likely better – than bottled water.

FAQ
Q. Why do I need a filter? Isn’t tap water safe?
A. US tap water is microbiologically safe to drink, as in, you won’t get a stomach ache from the water. Tap water quality varies from city to city – and has different levels of contamination that might affect health long term. Recently the EPA has revised its regulation of PFAS in tap water and is taking firmer stances to reduce lead in drinking water.
Q. What are the downsides to bottled water?
A. Bottled water is likely to have microplastics and the level of PFAS, lead and other heavy metals is often unknown or not regulated consistently. Meaning the quality of bottled water is not as good as you might think. The cost and the waste are also downsides for your wallet and the environment.
Q. What if I have a water filter on my fridge?
A. Filters on fridges are generally only to make water taste (and smell) better. But any filter is likely to remove some level of other contaminants (PFAS, heavy metals, lead, etc.)
Q. What about BRITA or PUR filters?
A. There are different types of filters for purchase at popular retailers. Most of them improve the taste of tap water, like fridge filters or this Waterdrop filter. Some filters are designed to remove lead, PFAS or other contaminants, so read the label. These filters often needs to be changed more often.
Q. What are the benefits of under-the-sink filters?
A. Under-the-sink water filters are easy to install (and un-install) and are affordable. There are cheaper ones that mostly just improve taste (though all filters remove some level of contaminants) and there are others, like WODER one or APEC featured on this site, that remove lead, PFAS and other contaminants, while also providing great-tasting water for 12 months.
Q. What about Reverse Osmosis (RO) filters?
A. Reverse Osmosis filters are expensive, but are generally the gold standard for highly contaminated water – such as water with uranium. RO filters remove virtually everything from the water that you wouldn’t want.
Q. What about whole-house or shower filters?
A. Whole-house filters that remove contaminants from water before it enters your house – is a great idea! People have found these filters provide better water for washing, (saving money on soap and detergent), and softer skin or healthier hair, (saving money on lotions and hair products) and of course the water is great for drinking. A whole-house water filter is definitely an idea to consider, however it usually requires a plumber and more of an investment. Shower or bath filters – specifically to remove the chlorine and other byproducts in the water – also receive raving reviews.
